STROUD ON WAY TO RETAINING CROWN

The Suzuki men are at it again, scrapping at the front of the field for national superbike glory.

Defending champion Andrew Stroud and three-time former champion Robbie Bugden were difficult to separate as the New Zealand Superbike Championships kicked off at Levels Raceway, near Timaru, at the weekend.

Kiwi hero Stroud and Australian Bugden, who have between them dominated the class for at least the past five years, raced handlebar-to-handlebar on the twisty South Canterbury track on Sunday, joined at times by a second Australian rider, Dan Stauffer, as the tone was set for another thrilling summer of superbike race action.

Stroud (Documentary Channel Pirelli Suzuki GSX-R 1000) won both the superbike class races, but that only tells half the story with action on the track much closer than that, less than a second the difference in the lap times of the leading riders.

The double win gives Hamilton’s Stroud a solid 14-point early lead over the two Australian riders, Bugden and Stauffer sharing second and third place finishes at Levels.

Bugden may be injured and practically written-off by his rivals, but the Christchurch-based Triple R team rider showed he was not ready to lie down just yet.

The three-time former New Zealand Superbike Champion from Brisbane had his leg broken at Wanganui’s famous Cemetery Circuit on Boxing Day but, regardless of that, the popular Brisbane rider still lifted himself from the sick bed to be on the starting line on Sunday.

Bugden (Mack Truck Suzuki Superbike), and his Christchurch team-mate James Smith (Elf Oils Suzuki Superbike), travelled to Timaru at the weekend to both race in the prestigious superbike class and each of the riders emerged with their credentials enhanced.

Despite his build-up being hampered by injury, Bugden qualified his Suzuki GSX-R 1000 on pole position and then ran at the sharp end of the field all weekend.

“It wasn’t a bad result,” said Bugden, in classic understatement.

“I certainly had the speed. I’ll only get stronger and faster from here as my recovery (from injury) continues.”

Meanwhile, team-mate Smith twice finished fourth on Sunday and he had to settle for fourth overall after this opening round.

Round two of the series is set for Teretonga Park, Invercargill, on February 5-6, with round three at Ruapuna Raceway, Christchurch, on February 12-13. The series then heads north for round four at Hampton Downs, near Meremere, on March 26-27, with the fifth and final round at Manfeild, near Palmerston North, on April 2-3.

SUZUKI MEN RARING TO GO

The national motorcycle road-race championship season kicks off in the South Island this weekend with a pair of Suzuki riders again favoured to lead the way in the glamorous superbike class.

Suzuki riders won four of the six New Zealand Superbike Championship classes last season and it looks as though it could be the men on the distinctive blue and white bikes who feature prominently this time around too.

Three-time New Zealand superbike champion, Brisbane’s Robbie Bugden, has declared he will be fast and fit to go when the 1000c bikes line up for battle at Levels Raceway, just outside Timaru, this weekend.

This is despite the fact that he hasn’t been able to ride as much as he’d have liked in the pre-season build-up period following an accident at the Cemetery Circuit street races in Wanganui on Boxing Day.

The victim of an over-exuberant rival, Bugden was shunted from behind, resulting in the popular Australian leaving the track with a broken leg.

Bugden won the New Zealand superbike crown in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and he would like nothing better than to snatch it back again in 2011.

But, even if he is back to his fighting best this weekend, most pundits favour his great rival, 2010 champion Andrew Stroud, to dominate.

Stroud wrapped up his third consecutive superbike title in the popular Suzuki International Tri Series, that competition wrapping up at that fateful Boxing Day race meeting, and the Hamilton-based 43-year-old father-of-eight is obviously still at the top of his game.

“I’m looking forward to battling with Robbie again,” said Stroud.

“Hopefully he’s fine again, but even if he’s only 90% fit, he’ll be very fast indeed. He’s a very determined rider and a great competitor. It takes more than just pain to stop him.

“He certainly makes my life interesting on the race track,” he laughed.

But it will not be just a two-horse race -- Stroud and Bugden expect to be challenged all the way by fellow Suzuki stars Craig Shirriffs (Feilding) and James Smith (Christchurch), as well as Australian first-timer at the Kiwi nationals Dan Stauffer, Hamilton’s Nick Cole and Tauranga’s Sloan Frost.

“Yes, I think Craig (Shirriffs) in particular will need to be watched. He usually goes very well around Levels Raceway.”

Wellington’s Glen Skachill, Auckland’s Karl Morgan and Christchurch’s Dennis Charlett should again rank among the leading riders in the 600cc class, split this year into two separate divisions, for supersport and superstock (unmodified) bikes.

With another Port of Nelson street race win placed under his belt just a couple of weeks ago, Charlett is currently in top form, while the Christchurch brothers James and Alastair Hoogenboezem move up from the 125cc and 650 Pro Twins class respectively to also give the 600cc class a good crack.

Dannevirke’s Geoff Booth (Suzuki) won’t be defending his Pro Twins 650 class title but fellow Suzuki rider Daniel Kempthorne, of Palmerston North, is ready to step into his boots.

Meanwhile, Wanganui pair Stephen Bron and Dennis Simonsen (Suzuki) are favoured to defend their crown in the sidecars class.

TIME TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS

The Manawatu-Orion Motorcycle Club is throwing a party and it’s one that’s expected to be a hot and dirty affair, and perhaps just a little bit noisy too.

The club celebrates its 100th anniversary this year and will kick off 12 months of celebration by again staging New Zealand’s largest stand-alone motocross event, the iconic Woodville Motocross Grand Prix, this weekend (January 28-30).

It’s a party-within-a-party too because the Honda-sponsored Woodville event this year marks it 50th running, using exactly the same piece of turf at the eastern end of the Manawatu Gorge that first hosted the event in 1961.

It’s a festival affair this year with three days of activities, the racing itself again offering championship titles in many classes, including mini, junior, senior, women, vintage and veterans’ categories.

The entire weekend will be a two-wheeled festival for the Manawatu region, including a freestyle motocross display planned for The Square, Palmerston North, on Saturday evening, featuring Manawatu’s world-renowned Levi Sherwood.

Sunday is the main race day at Woodville and a record turnout of riders is expected, including current, former and perhaps future New Zealand, Australasian and even world champions.

Track action on the Sunday includes races for seniors and veterans, as well as the fabled river race for the die-hard enduro exponents, likely to feature former world MX1 No.2 Josh Coppins, of Motueka, national MX1 champion and defending Woodville champion Justin McDonald, of Christchurch, former New Zealand and Australian motocross champion Cody Cooper, of Mount Maunganui, and 2009 United States cross-country champion Paul Whibley, of Pahiatua, to name just a few among the 700-plus entries.

Overseas interest is again high for the event with leading riders from Australia, the United Kingdom and Belgium also entered.

This year the Woodville motocross has, not unexpectedly, also attracted a bumper crop of talented “old timers”, riders who raced there in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, and their “parade of former stars” episode should cap off a memorable weekend for motocross enthusiasts.

The politics of Maori seats and Maori appointments

Some appear annoyed that Maori officials can vote on council committees without being elected by Aucklanders. Others are annoyed that the Government has refused to provide Maori seats in the Auckland supercity.

While the Auckland supercity legislation does not permit specific Maori seats in the Auckland City Council, it does permit unelected and advisory members of Maori statutory boards being able to vote on council committees – including having a casting vote. Two members from the nine-member board had been nominated for each of the majority of 20 council committees, and have advisory roles, notwithstanding the ability to have the casting vote, and thus be full decision makers.
However if a Maori representative did provide the casting vote, there is nothing to stop the full council overturning the decision.

Act Leader and Local Government Minister Rodney Hide said he would resign if the council had specific Maori seats. Perhaps he didn’t threaten to resign if there were appointed Maori who could enact a casting vote on council committees because he was aware that the Select Committee hearing the Super City legislation could well approve that decision, giving them “membership rights” – which Act voted for, while not agreeing with it.

It seems that not everyone realised that full membership rights also meant full voting rights.

But the Select Committee snubbed the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance, who wanted two Auckland Councillors elected by voters on the Maori roll and another appointed by mana whenua - local Maori with ancestral ties to the land. This decision is why Maori were given a separate forum called the Maori Statutory Board, while retaining the one electoral roll instead of an additional Maori roll, like we have for general elections.

Maori seats normally have a rationale based on indigeneity. Decisions on appointing Maori voting rights are not made on the basis of indigeneity. Even if you accept the indigeneity argument, most Maori in Auckland came from areas outside of Auckland so are not mana whenua – they are taura here and have ancestral ties to other areas. This was probably why the Royal Commission recommended a better compromise: One appointed mana whenua representive, and two others elected from the Maori roll.

This also has problems, as the appointed mana whenua representative would not be elected; and the two elected members will also be elected in part by mana whenua, as well as other Maori who reside in Auckland.

All this has led Labour – who supports Maori seats, while having a bill in the ballot to remove Maori parliamentary seats - to criticise the Government for not appointing Maori seats, but giving unelected Maori voting rights. Providing appointed voting rights sounds less democratic – although more politically tenable - that the provision of democratically elected Maori seats. Act supports neither, and has said so. National is quietly happy as it has Act on side on the prevention of Maori seats (which the Maori Party opposed, but voted for), and the Maori Party on side on the issue of voting rights ( which Act opposed, but voted for).

RAW NERVES AND ADRENALINE A FIERY MIX

Uncertainty and raw nerves, coupled with horsepower and adrenaline could make this year’s national motorcycle road-race series one of the most exciting in years.

The Castrol Power 1 New Zealand Superbike Championships kick off at Levels Raceway, near Timaru, this weekend (Jan 29-30) with nothing certain except that there will definitely be new names on the trophies in many of the championship classes when the five-round series finally wraps up at Manfeild in April.

The 600cc class champion last season, Hamilton’s Nick Cole (Kawasaki), and the No.2 600cc rider from 2010, Christchurch’s James Smith (Suzuki), both concentrate this year on the bigger superbike class, leaving national No.3 John Ross (Yamaha) as the likely favourite to win 600cc honours in 2011.

But Ross can take nothing for granted with Inglewood’s Midge Smart (Yamaha), Wellington’s Glen Skachill (Suzuki), Christchurch’s Dennis Charlett (Suzuki) and Auckland’s Jaden Hassan (Yamaha) among those all capable of winning.

The 600cc class will be split into two components this season -- supersport (modified) and superstock – the two separate championship classes running together on the race track but scored separately.

The champion in the 125cc class last season, Christchurch’s Alastair Hoogenboezem (Suzuki), is also not defending his title in 2011.

This perhaps leaves the way clear for the runner-up in 2010, young Auckland woman Avalon Biddle (Honda), to snatch the crown.

However, she can expect tough opposition from Rangiora’s Jake Lewis (Honda), Auckland teenager Daniel Mettam (Honda), Malaysian visitor Amirul Hafiq Azmi (Honda) and rising Australian star Josh McGrath (Yamaha).

Dannevirke’s Geoff Booth (Suzuki) won’t be back to defend his 650 Pro Twins title, meaning a new champion will be crowned in this class too. Who will step up to the plate here is anyone’s guess.

The battle for sidecars honours could be another tight one with Wanganui pair Stephen Bron and Dennis Simonsen (Suzuki) likely to have their hands full with Suzuki Tri Series rivals Adam Unsworth and Stu Dawe (Windle), also from Wanganui.

Meanwhile Waikato father-of-eight Andrew Stroud (Suzuki) is favoured to retain his national superbike title, although he’ll first have to withstand enormous pressure being applied by Smith, superbike class newcomer Cole and Hamilton’s Sloan Frost (BMW).

Three-time former champion Robbie Bugden (Suzuki), who was injured during the street circuit racing on Boxing Day, has vowed to be on the start line at Levels.

Another Australian, Yamaha’s Dan Stauffer, who won on the streets of Wanganui on Boxing Day, should also spark up the challenge for superbike glory, while Feilding’s Craig Shirriffs (Suzuki) and Taranaki’s Hayden Fitzgerald (Honda) could threaten too.

Round two of the series is set for Teretonga Park, Invercargill, on February 5-6, with round three at Ruapuna Raceway, Christchurch, on February 12-13. The series then heads north for round four at Hampton Downs, near Meremere, on March 26-27, with the fifth and final round at Manfeild, near Palmerston North, on April 2-3.

Who will win round two of the New Zealand Enduro Championships this weekend is anyone’s guess.

Results from round one in Waimiha in December give only a few clues because several of the expected front-runners that day will be absent when the series sparks back into life again for round two at Oparau, near Kawhia, on Saturday.

Pahiatua’s Paul Whibley (Yamaha) won the opening round of the Yamaha-sponsored series but he is packing his bags and heading overseas very shortly and won’t be at Oparau this weekend.

Round one runner-up was Taupo’s Rory Mead (Yamaha YZ250F), the world-class rider making a comeback from injury that day. Perhaps this should make him favourite to win outright or at least dominate his class on Saturday.

Third outright at round one was perennial frontrunner Karl Power (Honda CRF250) and he will also be a strong contender.

Several top riders struck problems at round one, including multi-time national champion Chris Birch, of Auckland, and Power’s cousin Chris Power, of Paeroa – both men crashing out of the race.

While KTM’s Birch will make the starting line-up at Oparau, it’s also his last race in New Zealand for a while as he heads away to South Africa soon after the event.

“It will be nice to sign off with a win but, to be honest, Operau hasn’t been too kind to me in the past,” said many-times national champion Birch.

A friend of Birch’s, from Cape Town in South Africa, top KTM rider Altus de Wet, will also line up to race at Oparau on Saturday.

As for Honda’s Chris Power, he shortly undergoes an operation on his injured shoulder and he’s not expected to be back in action until the final round of the series.

However, there are plenty of others to watch for this weekend, including Hokianga’s Mitchell Nield (Gas Gas, under-200cc two-stroke class), Auckland’s Michael Skinner (KTM, over-201cc two-stroke class) and New Plymouth’s Dougy Herbert (KTM, veterans).

Round three of the Yamaha-sponsored series is set for Whangamata on February 26.
